There’s no particular knife or awl that I would recommend, every leather worker probably has their own favorite, and the tools you choose will lend some of their character to your work.
I would suggest checking for a local Tandy shop. They typically have really great staff, free classes, and a decent selection of tools.
You’ll definitely want to sharpen anything you buy, they rarely come sharp enough.
